Health & Safety Information for Competitors

Please read this before race day.

Who This Notice Covers

All entrants, their guardians and their supporters must read this notice and follow it.

You are also responsible for getting to know the event course and all its hazards. Please tell your supporters that they must follow this notice too.

Primary Responsibility

You are responsible for your own health and safety during the event.

The event involves some risk of injury. Competitors will encounter wet road conditions, steep terrain and other random obstacles that are typically found in parks and reserves.

  • Do not attempt any section of the event you do not feel capable of completing safely.
  • Only take part if you believe you are fit to do so, as confirmed by a doctor.
  • At no stage should you do anything that would threaten your own safety or the safety of other people.
  • There are no road closures in this event. Take care and obey New Zealand road rules.
  • Obey marshals, police and traffic officials when they are instructing you for your safety.

Course and Conditions

  • Watch the conditions on the day and react accordingly for your own safety.
  • Large areas of the course may have uneven surfaces.
  • This is a rain or shine event. Bring enough clothing for before, during and after the event, suitable for the conditions on the day.
  • Some fluids will be provided on course. We encourage all competitors to carry extra fluids with them.

Look Out for Fellow Competitors

  • Please report any accidents during the event to staff or marshals.
  • Please help fellow competitors who need it.
  • St John paramedics will be on hand for first aid during the event.

Roads and Driveways

The roads on the course are open to all motorists at all times.

  • You may need to cross roads. Always be ready to stop, even if you have right of way. Please stay alert.
  • Traffic may come towards you from the left and right at larger driveways.
  • Road crossings may be marshalled. Only cross at the appointed crossing point, which is clearly marked.

If you cross a road anywhere other than an appointed crossing point, you may be treated as having left the course and will be disqualified.

General Safety

  • Asthmatics must carry an inhaler.
  • Spectators must not follow athletes in vehicles on the course at any time during the event.
  • Parents and guardians must keep children under control.
  • If a competitor is under 18, their parent or legal guardian is responsible for their safety.
  • Dogs must not accompany competitors in this event. If spectators have no choice but to bring a dog, it must be on a leash at all times and kept well clear of all competitors.

Heart Attack

We feel it is sensible to point out that heart attacks can happen at any time and in any place. The event involves physical exertion, so we have a contingency plan ready.

Heart attacks don't usually happen like they do in the movies. There are normally warning signs.

Warning signs of a heart attack

  • Chest discomfort: Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the centre of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
  • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body: This can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
  • Other symptoms: These may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or light-headedness.

If you have these symptoms while running

  1. Stop, rest and bring your heart rate down immediately.
  2. If the symptoms continue, stay where you are and call for help from fellow competitors.
  3. Find a phone and call 111 immediately. Ask for an ambulance, then follow the operator's instructions.
  4. After calling 111, call us. The emergency phone number is on the bottom of everyone's race number.

The race organisers have a rapid response plan that includes an automated external defibrillator (DEFIB).
